The United States would win the most gold medals (tied with China with 40), silver medals (44), bronze medals (42), and total medals (126). The men’s basketball team, led by LeBron James, Steph Curry, Anthony Edwards, Kevin Durant, and Anthony Davis, were heavy favorites to win a gold medal. Team USA would win all 5 of its exhibition games and go 3-0 in the preliminary round. In the knockout round the US would beat Brazil 122-87 in the quarterfinals with Davis adding 13 points and a team high 8 rebounds. The Americans would have their toughest test in the semifinal round against Serbia falling behind by 17 points in the first half and 13 by the start of the 4th quarter before coming back to win 95-91. In the gold medal game Team USA would defeat France 98-87, Davis would add 8 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 blocks in the medal clinching victory.
