While at Lincoln High School, he became the only high school sophomore to win the Gatorade National Player of the Year for boys’ basketball. His outstanding high school career helped him become a top five recruit in the 2021 class. Bates’ freshman year at Memphis saw an NCAA Tournament berth as Bates averaged 9.7 points per game. He then transferred to his hometown to play for Eastern Michigan, where he flourished, scoring 19.2 points per game along with 5.8 rebounds per game. As an NBA prospect, Bates appears likely to be a first-round pick in the 2023 NBA draft, and his strong performance at Eastern Michigan is only improving his draft status.
