With all eyes on the highly anticipated college debut of freshman star Emoni Bates, the Michigan native wasted no time in displaying flashes of greatness in his first college action against Tennessee Tech, leading the Tigers to an 89-65 victory while dropping 17 points on 6-9 shooting to kick off the season. In now his fourth season with the Tigers, Coach Penny Hardaway expressed much admiration for the poise and calmness shown by Bates in his debut and can only hope that the young forward provides the spark needed to elevate the Tigers to the next level after failing to win the American Athletic Conference or make the NCAA tournament in each of his first three seasons at Memphis.
