Magic Johnson Molten Gold Basketball

Heading into 1992, FIBA made the decision to allow NBA players to play in Olympic basketball tournaments, something that had not been allowed before. With the new rules in place, the United States put together what many consider the greatest basketball team ever assembled. Led by Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Larry Bird, among other superstars, this team was referred to as “The Dream Team.” The Dream Team lived every bit up to the hype as they rolled through the competition. They won the first of 2 gold medals in the Tournament of the Americas, dominating all six games. Magic Johnson averaged 9.7 points and 9 assists per game in these contests. With an average 117.3 points per game and an average winning margin of 43.8 points per game, Team USA easily won the gold medal with a 117-85 win over Croatia, the Dream Team’s closest game of the Olympics. Magic Johnson averaged 8 points per game and 5.5 assists per game as the main starting point guard. Johnson described this experience as “the greatest moment of my life in terms of basketball, bar none.”
