The 40th NHL All Star game was held February 7, 1989 at the Edmonton Northland Coliseum. This game marked the return of former Edmonton Oiler captain Wayne Gretzky to the city where he had played his entire NHL career. Gretzky, playing for the Campbell Conference was named the game's MVP after scoring a goal and adding two assists in a 9-5 victory over the Wales Conference.
