Willie O’Ree Autographed Boston Bruins Logo Hockey Puck

Making his NHL debut with the Boston Bruins on January 18, 2022, it would be exactly 64 years later to the day when the Boston Bruins decided to retire O’Ree’s number 22. The honor was well deserved as O’Ree had quite a legendary career in the NHL. While O’Ree’s time with Bruins and in the NHL was brief, he has made his biggest contributions to the sport off the ice. O’Ree is best known for being the NHL’s first black player and breaking the color barrier, he has also served as a diversity ambassador for the NHL for more than two decades and helped create several diversity programs and initiatives in the NHL including the “Hockey is for Everyone” programs in the 1990s. While O’Ree’s number was retired by the Bruins in 2022 he had already been inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2018.
