Details

While it may not have been a significant date at the time, January 18, 1958, would go down in history as one of hockey’s most important dates in the league’s history. The debut of Willie O’Ree in the NHL marked the debut of NHL’s first black player and the historic breaking of NHL’s color barrier. O’Ree would play last for the Bruins during the 1960-61 season, another black player would not play in the NHL until Mike Marson for the Washington Capitals during the 1974-75 season, 14 years later. While O’Ree’s career was brief, his impact on the game was lasting as he opened the door for all players of color to play and succeed in the NHL. O’Ree’s number was retired by the Boston Bruins on January 18, 2022, 64 years to the day of his debut.

This image is autographed by Willie O’Ree. O’Ree’s signature was witnessed by an Upper Deck representative as part of UDA’s 5-step authentication process. This item is limited to 125.
