Since 1895, the University of Pittsburgh football program has squared off against rival West Virginia University in the monumental Backyard Brawl Game. The 105th time these teams would play would be one of the most anticipated matchups in recent times. Not only was this the 2022-2023 season opener, but it also was the first time these teams have played each other in 11 years due to the breakup of the Big East Conference. Kedon Slovis was under the spotlight to kick off his career at the University of Pittsburgh. In a primetime game, he was tasked to lead the Panthers to a victory over the Mountaineers for the first time since 2008. With the pressure of this nationally televised rivalry game upon him, Slovis would put on a performance as he would lead the offense to four scoring drives. Trailing by seven in the fourth quarter, Slovis put together a near perfect drive leading his team 92 yards down the field to tie the game. The Panthers defense would get a game-winning pick-six to conclude the Backyard Brawl Game with a 38-31 victory. Slovis was able to extend Pitt’s winning record over WVU to 62-40-3.
