For over a century, the Backyard Brawl has been a monumental rivalry game between the University of Pittsburgh and West Virginia University. Not only was this the 2022-2023 season opener, but it also was the first time these football teams have played each other in 11 years due to the breakup of the Big East Conference. Kedon Slovis was under the spotlight to kick off his career at the University of Pittsburgh. In a primetime game, he was tasked to lead the Panthers to a victory over the Mountaineers for the first time since 2008. Under center for West Virginia was Slovis’ old teammate J.T. Daniels. These two quarterbacks were once competing for a starting job at USC, but they now found themselves matching up in an ACC rivalry game. Slovis would put on a performance as he would throw for 308 yards along with a touchdown pass. Down by seven in the fourth quarter, Slovis would lead his team 92 yards down the field to tie the game. The Panthers defense would get a game-winning pick-six to conclude the Backyard Brawl Game with a 38-31 victory.
