After finishing as the worst team in the OHL during the 2018-2019 season despite making it to the playoffs in each of the previous six seasons, the Kingston Frontenacs were a team desperately seeking a superstar to help revive the organization’s winning culture. With the first overall pick in the 2019 OHL Draft, Kingston had zero doubts about who their superstar was as they selected fifteen-year-old Shane Wright who had just been granted “exceptional status” in order to be able to play major junior a year earlier than everyone else. A once childhood dream was now fully playing out in Wright’s life, and he wasted no time taking reign of his rookie season by slashing his way towards a 39 goal, 27 assist campaign. With what many are calling one of the most impressive OHL rookie runs in history, Wright was not only named an alternate captain by his teammates and coaches but also awarded the 2020 CHL Rookie of the Year.
