After becoming just the sixth player in history to be granted “exceptional status” allowing for him to begin play as a major junior a year early, 15-year-old Shane Wright had all sights set on living up to the sky high expectations created by the previous “exceptional” OHL superstars such as John Tavares, Aaron Ekblad, and not to mention two-time MVP, Connor McDavid. With this exceptional status, Wright was selected #1 overall in the 2019 OHL Draft by the Kingston Frontenacs, a team that was in dire need of a spark after finishing last in the league the season prior. During his rookie season, Wright recorded 66 points on 39 goals and 27 assists in just 58 games, leading the Frontenacs in scoring and becoming the driving catalyst that the team needed in order to become playoff contenders.
