Details
The first of two Sports Illustrated covers that he appeared on in 1970 and five total, Bobby Orr’s career was a unique and special one from start to finish. Playing as a defenseman, Orr brought an offensive aspect to the position not seen in the game to that point and still rarely seen by defenseman today. Until Orr entered the league in 1966, no defenseman had scored 20 goals in more than two decades, Orr would do it in seven straight seasons from 1968-1975. Orr became the first defenseman to record 100 assists in a season when he put up 102 in the 1970-71 season and became the first player to ever do so. 1970 saw Bobby Orr win the first of his two Stanley Cup titles, both with the Boston Bruins. The Bruins would play the St. Louis Blues and sweep the series 4-0.
This Sports Illustrated cover print from May 4th, 1970, is autographed by Bobby Orr. Orr’s signature was witnessed by an Upper Deck representative as part of UDA’s 5-step authentication process.
