In looking for the proper destination to finish his career, it’s only fitting that The Great One spent his final three seasons on ice while skating for the New York Rangers at the world’s most famous arena, Madison Square Garden. Giving even more incentive to join the Rangers than just the prestige of MSG, Wayne Gretzky had the opportunity to reunite with former teammate Mark Messier in an effort to get back to their championship winning ways that they once saw in Edmonton early in their careers. Gretzky’s youth and dominance seemed to be rejuvenated in his first season with the Rangers (1996-1997) as he led the team with 97 points and even provided the MSG with a throwback type highlight in the first round of the playoffs with his three goal, natural hat trick performance that took place in the span of less than 7 minutes on ice during Game 4 against the Florida Panthers. With this momentum shifting display of sheer will and dominance, Gretzky bolstered the Rangers to a series upset and eventual Eastern Conference Finals run where they were later defeated by the Philadelphia Flyers.
